about

Nostalgia and trauma in a cab on the way to work.

lyrics

Time clicks
Day, triggered on the wheel
rat race begins
forward, forging of the steel.
But still, lids drowzed, hunched in taxi I sleep
On my way down east Houston street
It ain’t easy
to the seize the facing of the day, dismay
Hijack this car au revoir I say.
drive for weeks
tears, running oblique streaks
Memories sending me nowhere I seek
Can’t break out
Only way is up my love
In my Thirties I was thirsty drinking half empty cups
then i came to you, you're the one I chose
you took me in, still got one eye closed
We can make a pact
Keep each other in tact
Knowin what I know
No I’d never look back

—I know, I can trust me now,
But I didn’t trust me then.

the truth, ooze, like a poison you drew
deep dark despair
yeah, a nasty brew
These times, watercolors
bleed into brown
ugliest sunrise some eyes ever found
I was 20, choked on a radio show
santa cruz freestyling, yo, ready to flow
but I froze, felt my mind buzz
host gave me a look singed my peach fuzz
left with tail, between my legs
fed my passion so it’s lasting
promised never again
shake my head
driver eyes me from the mirror
neither knows the pleasures or
the drama we fear
steer clear of that
dark pigeons collapse
knowing what I know
no I’d never go back

—I know, I can trust me now,
But I didn’t trust me then.

Grandma Fortuna
grew the avocados in back
shot slingshots a lot
watch each other react
trash can lids, sit, crinkle and cracked
shot so far in space eyes couldn’t keep track
thinking of my Blue and yellow pair of parakeets
they intertwined necks peckin sunflower seeds
but one day, i heard their song stop
held my breath, lifted the floral cloth
their notes strangled inter-tangled, dead eyes
now i check around corners, avoiding surprise
cabbie leave me on avenue D
walk extra block, block “why will you leave me”?
Make clear my path
Crosswalk’ll come back
Knowing what I know
No I’d never go back
steer clear of that
dark pigeons collapse
knowing what I know
no I’d never go back

—I know, I can trust me now,
But I didn’t trust me then.
